TARGET
The keys to the mission to Mars were reconnaissance of the planet and testing of the mission's Pathfinder landing system before the rocket carrying Pathfinder was even launched.
Below, you'll see a picture of the Martian polar region, taken by an earlier reconnaissance probe, and scientists testing the Pathfinder's landing apparatus and robot rover while the Pathfinder was still on Earth.
