VOYAGE |
Pathfinder would find out more information than its predecessor, the Viking Series of probes. Scientists had learned much about the Red Planet from those probes, which spit out information for a few hours, then fell silent. Pathfinder would be different, because it would have a robot rover which would allow (excuse the expression) moving pictures, and, with luck, the batteries would last long enough for at least a couple of da ys. As it turned out, scientists were able to get several days -- not hours -- of information before the rover's batteries would no longer function. The voyage to Mars would take the Pathfinder to the surface of Mars in what has to be the most significant event in recent history, thanks in most part to the Internet, because NASA posted a web site about its mission to Mars, and kept it updated daily.
